January 11th
Whilst Helen was scrolling through Facebook, she spotted an advert for HBEES… just like magic, she received an email from the Business Support Team at Hull City Council not long after.
January 13th
She jumped straight online and registered her business – a cafe located in a Grade II Listed Building in Whitefriargate – Liquid Jade.
January 18th
Helen didn’t have to wait long before she found out her business was eligible for the scheme. HBEES got to work straight away and sent their energy partners, NPS, to her premises to have a little nosy.
4 working days later
Helen received her energy report back from HBEES which suggested upgrading her storage heaters, improve the lighting and install draft excluders.
Helen was delighted to be able to make her building greener – knowing that as a listed building, it is sometimes quite difficult to do so.
January 31st
Deciding to go ahead with all of HBEES’ recommendations, she got in touch with a local supplier – Campbell’s Electrical Services – who set to work installing LED lights, upgrading the heaters and installing draft excluders where appropriate.

“The Energy Efficiency scheme came at completely the right time for my business. The overheads due to the old heating system and lighting were becoming unsustainable, especially with the challenges we were facing as a hospitality business during a pandemic.
The café was always cold no matter what we did with the heating. The lighting also needed updating as all the bulbs were old tungsten ones.
The grant has really helped me move the business forward with energy efficiency, future proofing and reducing overheads.
It also makes a real difference to the feel of the café. It’s an even more comfortable and welcoming experience. I’m privileged to own a café in the heart of Hull city centre on Whitefriargate and this support from Hull City Council through European funding has been invaluable.
